She Said, He Said // P & D

How long have you been dating and/or married?
She Said:
How long have you been dating and/or married?
We will have been married 16 years in November!!
He Said:
My wife and I will be married for 15 years in November.  We actually celebrate 2 anniversaries.  One for when we were married by the law 15 years ago and the second is when we were married before God, in a church in Rio de Janeiro 8 years ago.

What did you think of each other when you first met? Was it love at first sight?
She Said:
What did you think of them when you first met?  Was it love at first sight?
I thought Pete was a nice man when I first met him.  He seemed very sweet and kind.  However, it was not love at first sight.
He Said:
It was not love at first sight.  I am an internal auditor for a major oil company.  I met my wife when I audited her department.  The last thing she wanted to see were auditors.

What have you learned from your relationship?
She Said:
I have learned that this relationship is the most precious thing that I have on this Earth and that it is to be guarded and cherished at all expense.  Good relationships take a lot of work. They are like gardens--they require lots of tending, watering, fertilizing and tender love. It is only when both parties are willing to participate that there can be success.  I have also learned that it is not always the most important thing to be right.  Sometimes how someone feels is much more important than proving your point. When it is necessary to prove your point though, prove it with love and kindness.  Strength of couple rather than self is built in a relationship where love and kindness are exercised in all things.  In summary, through my relationship I have finally learned to live and be happy.
He Said:
I have learned from my relationship that marriages, and for that matter all relationships, are based on trust, healthy communication, and a recognition that both parties need to be able to compromise a bit for the good of the whole.

Who makes the decisions in your relationship?
She Said:
With regard to what to have for dinner--me. With regard to what music to listen to--Pete.  With regard to all other things, it is a joint decision.
He Said:
We make all major decisions together.

When did you know you had found "the one"?
She Said:
I knew I had found "the one" when I was faced with a difficult decision regarding my career.  I had been offered a dream job in another state a few months after we started dating.  I asked Pete about the job fully expecting him to tell me I had to choose between the job and him (which is what a selfish person would do).  However, he told me that I had to pursue my dream and that if we were meant to be, it would all work out.  This is the first time in my life that anyone had put me and my dreams first.  At this point, I knew in my heart that if I were to ever get married, it would be to this man.  (Note that I was thirty-four at the time and had pretty much settled on the fact that I would be single forever.)  I moved to the other state and we continued to date long distance.   Needless to say, I discovered that my dream was in Texas with my sweetheart.  After a year and eight months apart, I moved back to Texas as Pete's wife.
He Said:
I knew I had found "the one" as soon as we began talking about our value system and our definitions of right and wrong.

What is the best advice you have to offer a new couple?
She Said:
There are basically three things that lead to a successful relationship/marriage.  1) Let no one come between you and your spouse/significant other.  Only God should be above your spouse/significant other.  If you are committed to this relationship, then you have to put your all into it.  2) Communicate.  Your relationship will never make it unless both parties agree to communicate.  Communication is not always easy.  Hard things sometimes need to be said but it is always better to say them up front rather than have them fester in your heart.  The key is to say them with love.  Remember to choose your words carefully--they cannot be taken back.  While you can say sorry, that word never fully erases the sting of sharp words which are never forgotten.  3)  Love and kindness should flow both ways.  Don't always expect to be the recipient of all things good in the relationship.  As much, if not more, satisfaction can be had from giving.  Giving doesn't always mean material things either.  Material things are societies way of expressing love.  Giving of yourself and your time make for some of the most wonderful gifts.  I have a card that Pete made for me early in our relationship.  I have it framed and hanging in our bedroom.  If I had to leave our home quickly and could only take a few things with me, that would be one of the first things I would grab because it is precious to me.
He Said:
The best advice I can give to new couples is that each person in the marriage needs to always look for ways to please the other.  If both parties do that consistently then the marriage will be successful.  There will be disagreements but as long as neither party dwells on them, then they will not become the focus.

What was your first date?
She Said:
A picnic/BBQ hosted by one of Pete's colleagues at work.
He Said:
Our first meal together was we met for lunch at Ninfa's Mexican Restaurant so I could return some tapes which I had conveniently not returned to her earlier.  Our first real date was an office party at the boss's lake house in Conroe.  When I reached out to hold her hand we both literally felt "electricity".

What are five words that describe you?
She Said:
Compassionate, loyal, faithful, loving and smart
He Said:
Positive - I always look at the glass as half full.
Caring - I care for my loved ones and will protect them to the end. Loved ones include my wife, my children, and my entire family.  Oh, and our 4 beautiful kitties.
Christian - I love my God and my Savior.
Giving - I will freely give of my time, finances, and spiritual gifts to the glory of His Kingdom.
Musical -While I am not a musician, I am a lover of a wide range of musical genre, from Mariachi to Hip Hop, from Eminem to Ella Fitzgerald, from Gipsy Kings to Jerry Butler.

What are five words that describe your significant other?
She Said:
Loving, beautiful (inside and outside), smart, compassionate and loyal/faithful (five words are not enough!!)
He Said:
Loving - I am fully blessed with her love.  She deeply cares for all animals and will protect our 4 kittens from any harm at any cost.  She loves those who love and care for her.
Discerning - One of her many spiritual gifts is the incredible ability to know when something/someone is not right in a particular situation.
Intelligent - She is the smartest woman I have ever met.
Faithful -She is faithful to God and to her friends she is faithful to the end.
Sexy - As I said, I am blessed with the most beautiful and gorgeous woman alive.

It's always fun to gain wisdom from our parents. It was fun to hear from my Dad and Stepmom and hopefully soon, we can hear from my Mom and Stepdad!

How long have you been dating and/or married?
She SaidWe've been together seven years this January, and married a year and 3 months-ish.
He Said6.5 years together: 1.5 years married

What did you think of each other when you first met? Was it love at first sight?
She Said
I met Jon at church, and when I first met him he and his dad were holding the doors open for everyone -- I thought he was kind and sweet but I didn't fall in love with him until later...
He SaidI thought she was the most amazing girl I had ever laid eyes on. And yes… it was love at first sight

What have you learned from your relationship?
She Said
Honestly, way too much to say. We started dating when we were 16, so we've grown up together and learned so much through that. But I would say the most significant thing is that we learned what the meaning of commitment was and how to truly love/commit to someone.
He SaidHow to truly love someone. How to be a better person. How to be productive. I've learned that I need encouragement and that Savannah is the most amazing cheerleader in the world. I've learned that we compliment each other so perfectly and that there is nothing we can't do as long as we stick together.

Who makes the decisions in your relationship?
She Said
We are both very equal, we like to discuss all major decisions and come to an agreement, but I do my best to respect his final say if he feels strongly about something. There are however aspects of our relationship where we "specialize" in and take leadership (budget, home cleaning etc..).
He SaidWe both make decisions depending on what it is and we both make sure to consult the other. However, when it comes down to it, I make the final call.

When did you know you had found "the one"?
She Said
Honestly we just clicked...our character, values and desires for life matched up and we wanted to take that journey together.
He Said I just knew.

What is the best advice you have to offer a new couple?
She Said
a) Don't get into a relationship unless you picture a possibility of marrying that person. (b) Be students of each other...learn about each other and the simple things they love, their quirks, what blesses them...etc. (c) Communicate!
He SaidMake sure you dedicate time to each other and you communicate. If you don't, conflict is sure to arise. Also, learn to see things from your partner's point of view; being able to understand how the other one thinks is helpful in making sure your significant other feels happy, respected, and loved.

What was your first date?
She Said
We didn't go on a "first date" for a long time...but on his birthday in high school I surprised him and we went out to Red Lobster, just him and I. :)
He SaidRed Lobster for my b-day lunch! It was a freaking amazing surprise.

She Said, He Said // A & W

>> How long have you been dating and/or married?
She Said: Married 9.5 yrs
He Said: married for almost 9.5 years.

>> What did you think of each other when you first met? Was it love at first sight?
She Said: For me, yes. I liked him instantly and made it my mission to get him to love me back!! :) it worked.
He Said: she was cute; she didn’t remember our first encounter. I bought an Entertainment book from her. She came around a year later and showed some interest!

>> What have you learned from your relationship?
She Said: Relationships are sticky, messy, and hardwork. But the benefits of sharing your life with someone you truly love are worth all the good, the bad, and the ugly!!
He Said: you mean what am I still learning? That it changes; evolves. When outside factors are introduced (children, jobs, events, etc.) they might, or most likely will effect the relationship.

>> Who makes the decisions in your relationship?
She Said: I make a lot of day to day decisions, I'm super independent. But the "real" and big decisions we make together and ultimately, he always has the final say as the head of our home.
He Said: decisions are made depending on what needs to be decided. Events/social life = usually her. What coffee cup to take to work = me. Improvements/maintenance/ insurance on house, cars, property (the boring stuff) = me. Spending = both of us usually. We balance each other out on spending. I’m frugal, I admit that; she is …not, and she’ll admit it!

>> When did you know you had found "the one"?
She Said: When in a crowded room full of people, the place I thrive, he walked in, and I knew I'd rather be sitting alone in a corner booth with him forever!!
He Said: initially it was when I made a comment to a friend that I “wanted to marry a girl like Whitney someday” and she overheard it. We realized it later when neither of us would give up in the face of adversity. We’ve been through a lot during our time together and have realized how tough we (and our relationship) really are.

>> What is the best advice you have to offer a new couple?
She Said: Don't give up on the passion, no matter how long you're together. Be willing to love passionately and fight passionately too! ...but...don't sweat the small stuff...that's not passion, that's just silly.
He Said: you give up your “self rights” when you get married. Marriage should be selfless. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have opinions or do things your way, but you need to consider your spouse before you open your mouth or act on something. Things may come a bit easier to you that way. This is a challenging process, and I am still working on it!

>> What was your first date?
She Said: Our first official date? Or our first..."secret" date... Haha! Dinner with friends and ice skating. :)
He Said:….uh a double date with a couple from a church we used to attend. We went to dinner and then ice skating, I believe.

>> What are five words that describe you?
She Said: Confident, outgoing, loyal, fun, witty
He Said: diplomatic (at most times), particular, funny (she’ll say inappropriate), determined, fun

>> What are five words that describe your significant other?
She Said: Thoughtful, hard working, silly, loyal,  manly
He Said: I would say put-together, but that’s two words so I’ll say beautiful.  Head strong, intelligent, motivated, passionate.

>>How long have you been dating and/or married?
Pie N’ the Sky said: 3 years as of today!! Happy Anniversary guys!

>>What did you think of each other when you first met? Was it love at first sight?
She Said: It was definitely not love at first sight. I met Mike at work about 6 months before we started dating. I thought he was cute but had heard he was quite the ladies man so I made a point to stay away from him. Honestly, I mostly ignored him until the month before I left for college. I decided what the heck, I'm leaving soon, how bad could adding another friend be? Well, obviously we didn't stay friends and the rest is history
He Said: When I first saw Allison I definitely checked her out. I am a total sucker for a girl with long legs and long curly hair. That is my weakness and she had both beautiful legs and amazing curly hair. It wasn't love at first sight but I was definitely very interested in her. But of course, she wanted nothing to do with me, and so began the chase!

>>What have you learned from your relationship?
She Said: Marry your best friend. Being such close friends has made communication so much easier and it makes life more fun!
He Said: I've matured a lot throughout our relationship. We all know girls are more mature than boys, so Allison has helped turn me into a man

>>Who makes the decisions in your relationship?
She Said: Mike does. I may be the creative brains behind many things, but I always end up asking Mike what he thinks. I've never been much of a leader. I do much better in a supporting role.
He Said: I usually make the decisions on bigger things but I always make Allison choose the restaurant and movie. She always comes up with crazy good ideas and I help work out kinks. We're an awesome team

>>When did you know you had found "the one"?
She Said: I knew Mike was a keeper by the end of our first date. Needless to say, I fell hard. I've grown up with tons of guy friends and dated my fair share of them throughout my years, but I had never met a guy I could talk openly for hours on end with. He was spontaneous, kind, goofy, smart, and was able to keep up with my go-go-go lifestyle :)
He Said: I fell hard for her after just our first date. I was pulling out every card. I did anything and everything I could to impress her. Plus it was so easy to just talk with her. There were no awkward pauses, no nervousness. Which is why I was able to relax and be able to impress her.

>>What is the best advice you have to offer a new couple?
She Said: Communication is everything and DO go to sleep mad. Talking things out has been a godsend in our relationship. On the contrary, some fights are just not worth having. If you're mad, say "I love you" and sleep on it. If you're still mad in the morning [though 95% of the time I never am] then you can talk it out more calmly.
He Said: Love will just fall into your lap, but keeping that love and making it last takes work and dedication. It is true what they say all good things worth having don't come easy

>>What was your first date?
She Said: Mike took me to this little Hippie town in Dayton where we walked around these fun little shops, grabbed food, took lots of pictures, and then afterward we went to a farm and fed the animals. When he dropped me off we didn't want the night to end so he didn't let it. We drove to a random playground and sat on the playset talking for hours. We ended the night running through sprinklers on a golf course. IT was by far the coolest and most unique date I've ever been on.
He Said: I found out that she hadn't been to this hippy town that was just outside of Dayton. So I used the excuse to ask her out on a date. I took her for a day of pictures, to visit the dairy farm, and look at all the neat shops. She didn't want the date to end and honestly neither did I so we went to a schoolyard and sat on the jungle gym and just talked for hours. At the end of the night I laid down a clever little line to open the door for me to give her a good night kiss. She's been mine ever since.

>> How long have you been dating and/or married?
She Said: 3 ½ years
He Said: 3 ½ years

>> What did you think of each other when you first met? Was it love at first sight?
She Said:
The first time we met was in between classes at UNT, he was in a huge hurry and it was super hot outside so it was more of a hi and bye meeting. Several months later around Christmas time we were able to meet again through mutual friends and I was so excited to see him and had instant butterflies. He’s so handsome : )
He Said: Well the very first time we met was just kind of in passing and I was on my way to a particularly stressful class at UNT, so I didn’t really think much of anyone, but the first time we got to sit down and talk a couple of months later, I was definitely taken.

>> What have you learned from your relationship?
She Said:
I’ve learned that it’s much more important respect each other and compromise on things that is it is to be right all the time.
He Said:  I think I’ve learned quite a bit about compromise and forgiveness

>> Who makes the decisions in your relationship?
She Said:
Most decisions, like where to eat or what movie to see are pretty mutual but on major decisions I would say I default to Branden
He Said: Most decisions are pretty mutual

>> When did you know you had found "the one"?
She Said: "
The One” makes me feel like I’m in a romantic comedy and not real life so I feel a little silly talking in those terms, but what I can say is that Branden is all the things I value in a man and I’m so happy with our life right now and I know I will be happy for a very long time.
He Said: have a difficult time subscribing to the idea of a “one”, but what I can subscribe to is the fact that Kelsey compliments many of the areas where I am weak and visa versa.  That and she’s just fun to have around.

>> What is the best advice you have to offer a new couple?
She Said: Pick
your battles. There are things worth fighting for but most of the time it’s really not worth it.
He Said: Just have fun.  If you can’t laugh with the person you’re with, it’s going to be tough

>> What was your first date?
She Said:
We went on an awesome date, he drove an hour to my apt to pick me up and took me to Dallas to eat and go ice-skating. It was so fun and I had never been before! We skated and talked for about two hours, which must have been love because my ankles hurt after about fifteen minutes. : ) Then he drove me all the way back home and then an drove an hour to his house. I didn’t realize at the time how sweet that was, because I didn’t know he lived that far away!
He Said: Maggiano’s and ice skating

>> What are five words that describe you?
She Said:
Tenderhearted, imaginative, protective, creative, focused
He Said: Easy-going, independent, random, art appreciate, creative

>> What are five words that describe your significant other?

>> How long have you been dating and/or married?
She Said: We have been dating for a little over 6 years.
He Said: We have been dating for 6 wonderful years!

>> What did you think of each other when you first met? Was it love at first sight?
She Said:
I thought he was handsome. I really wanted to be his friend, but felt like he was too cool to want to hangout with me, ha! Which is slightly true because I was a bit of a dork back then, or rather just extremely awkward. I'm sure he'll call me a stalker at some point in his answer!
He Said:
I thought she was really nerdy and cute. I'm not sure it was love at first sight, mostly because I was 16, but I knew this girl would be apart of my l life.

>> What have you learned from your relationship?
She Said:
Oh geeze, what have I not learned?? I've learned the true meaning of love, sacrifice, submission, kindness, patience, and countless other things. I've learned what it means to give of yourself and not always get my way. I've learned about who he is and even more about who I am. Most importantly though, I've learned that God has a plan and being with this man, standing next to him on a daily basis, is one of the hugest blessings God has provided me with.
He Said:
Now I know this isn't true for all relationships, but in ours I've learned patience and to be someone they can depend on.

>> Who makes the decisions in your relationship?
She Said:
Hmm... mostly him. I usually do all the planning and let him know choices that need to be made, but he gets the final say so. He always takes my wants and wishes into account though ^_^
He Said:
It really depends on the circumstance...but if it comes to movies, it is definitely me! On a more serious note if I were honest I think our relationship tends to be more 60/40.

>> When did you know you had found "the one"?
She Said:
I just knew. I know it might sound silly, but I did. I had never met a boy (cause then he was a boy) that I had ever even considered wanting to spend my life with. There were boys who wanted to date me, but for some reason at a young age, I got it in my head that the man I dated would be the man I married. I didn't want to waste my time on anyone who I knew I wouldn't marry, so then when I met Elisha... I just knew.
He Said: I'd like to think it was a "woke up one morning and just knew" type of thing, but over the years she's become apart of my life I can't, and don't want to, live without. She's my sounding board, my fun and corky best-friend, a perfect compliment, a hopeful ray, is ridiculously attractive (which is always a plus), and God's greatest gift!

>> What is the best advice you have to offer a new couple?
She Said:
There's so much I would want to share! But I suppose the best advice is this; Relationships are about giving, if you do everything to make him happy and he does everything to make you happy then both of you will be happy. It's when you start to become selfish and put yourself first, that things start to go downhill. That, and enjoy every moment and trust that if you're suppose to be together, you will be together, patience truly is a virtue;)
He Said:
Learn what the most important thing is to your significant other and do that thing. Spend time, give gifts, be affectionate, etc.

>> What was your first date?
She Said:
Our first date was to go see The Island, ha! It was such a lame movie, but it was fun. He was wearing a brown shirt with a dove on it from Hollister and I was wearing a maroon polo from A&F, we were so meant for each other.
He Said:
We had two "first dates", but the one we usually tell people was our first was to see the movie "The Island."
